Emergency services called to city centre apartment block after reports of 'people on the roof'

Emergency services were called to a block of flats in Manchester city centre after reports of people seen standing on the roof. Fire crews and police were called to Great Ancoats Street at around 7.30pm this evening (Saturday 9 April).

Greater Manchester Fire Service confirmed they sent a number of crews to the scene and used a short extension ladder to assist the operation. Local residents described seeing a large emergency response in the area.

Pictures from the scene show a police car, four fire crews and a Technical Response Unit parked outside the block of flats. The nature of the incident has not been confirmed, and it is not yet clear if anyone was injured.

Fire crews and police officers appeared to have left the area by around 8.30pm after it was believed to have been cleared, however. A spokesperson for GMP said they were called to a report of three people on a roof, but that no-one was when they arrived.
