Emergency services called to busy road after car bursts into flames

Emergency services raced to the Whirlies roundabout in East Kilbride this afternoon after a car caught fire.

Thankfully, no one was injured but there were some delays as drivers tried to avoid the burning vehicle.

A picture posted on social media showed plumes of smoke coming from the silver car.

One bystander said: "Everyone was just trying to get away from it, we were originally behind it and people were switching lanes trying to get away.

"It had originally started smoking at the roundabout just down from Kingsgate. A car had stopped at the lights ahead to phone the emergency services by the looks of it.

"Thankfully, my friend saw the lady who was driving the car was at the island between the lanes on the grass."

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 2.14pm on Wednesday, September 8 to reports of a car on fire near to Whirlies roundabout, East Kilbride.

“Operations Control mobilised one appliance and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting one vehicle.

“There were no reported casualties and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
