Emergency services called and road closed after building collapses in County Durham town

Emergency building work had to be carried out after the gable end of a shop collapsed in a County Durham town.

The gable end of Ali's Store on St Andrew's Road, Bishop Auckland collapsed at 7.30am on Friday leaving rubble and debris spread across the street.

Emergency Services and Durham County Council were called to the scene.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt during the incident.

The property and the area around it had been cordoned off to clean up rubble and debris that had fallen.

Wires from the property had also been found hanging from the building.

The store has been in the town for more than 40 years and is important to the local community.

A temporary traffic light system has been installed to manage and direct traffic.

Structural engineers also attended the scene at St Andrew's Road with the area around the shop still cordoned off on Saturday.

It is understood the shop's owners were inside at the time.
