Emergency services called after group become 'trapped in heavy snow' in Co Carlow

Emergency services were called to Mount Leinster on New Year's Eve after a number of vehicles became trapped in heavy snow.

The wintry conditions began to hit on Thursday afternoon with many mountainous areas in Carlow becoming treacherous.

Multiple units of the fire brigade were called to the area and were eventually able to get all the vehicles down safely.

Carlow County Fire and Rescue said: "Firefighters from Bagenalstown Fire Brigade are currently in attendance on Mt Leinster assisting a large number of vehicles which have become trapped in heavy snow.

"Update - All members of the public and firefighters are safely down from the mountain, the 9 Stones road from both the Bunclody and Borris sides will remain CLOSED overnight."

Roads all over the country have been left icy after the chilly spell with no sign of warmer weather to come anytime soon.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "A cold and frosty start today, New Year's Day, with icy patches. Dry in most areas, with sunny spells, but scattered showers of rain or sleet will affect northern and western coastal counties. Cold, with afternoon highs of 3 to 6 degrees, in light to moderate northerly winds.

"Temperatures will drop quickly after dark with a widespread frost setting in early tonight under largely clear skies. It will stay dry in most parts, but a few showers will affect Ulster and Connacht, turning wintry as they move inland.

"Cloud amounts will increase overnight with showers in the north and northwest becoming more frequent towards morning. Lowest temperatures ranging +1 to -3 degrees in light northwest or variable breezes."
