Emergency services called after fire traps man in top floor flat

A man was rushed to hospital after a fire broke out in a top floor flat in Toxteth this afternoon.

Multiple ambulances, three fire engines and police patrol cars attended the scene at the junction of North Hill Street and Princes Road at around 12.45pm.

North Hill Street was closed between the junction of Princes Road and Claribell Street as fire crews battled to contain the blaze in a tall multi-storey building.

Two windows appeared to be blackened by smoke damage, and fire investigators were visible inside.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service group manager Craig Whitfield told the ECHO at the scene: "In a nutshell we were called to a fire in the block of flats at this address.

"We sent three fire engines straight to the scene and fought to extinguish the fire at the top floor.

"From the flat one male casualty was taken to hospital by NWAS for assessment. The fire was extinguished and crews completely searched the building, with no other issues being found.”

GM Whitfield said other residents in the block were evacuated and an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.

It is not believed there were any further injuries.
