A man in his 50s has died in what is believed to be a light aircraft crash in a field on the border of Essex and Suffolk.

Essex Police said they were called to “reports of a light aircraft in distress” at Belchamp Walter just before 11.50am on Sunday.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the East Anglian times, there is a small private landing strip close to the site, four miles west of Sudbury.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said they sent five fire engines to the scene while another three were sent from the Suffolk brigade.

The man’s next of kin have been informed.
