Emergency services attend fire at Orange Hall near Magherafelt

Emergency services attended the scene of a fire at an Orange Hall in Co Derry.

PSNI and NIFRS are in attendance at an incident on the Aghagaskin Road near Magherafelt.

The public is being asked to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Police are currently at the scene of a fire at an Orange Hall in the Aghagaskin Road near Magherafelt, along with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

"Members of the public are asked to avoid the area at this time."

A Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) Spokesperson said: “NIFRS were called to reports of a building fire in Ballynougher Orange Hall, Aghagaskin Road, Magherafelt at 16.52pm on Sunday 30th October 2022.

"Fire Appliances from Maghera, Magherafelt and Springfield, an Aerial Appliance, a Water Tanker, 29 Fire-fighters and 2 Officers were in attendance. Firefighters used 4 Jets to extinguish the fire.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation. The incident was closed at 20.14pm.”

DUP Mid Ulster MLA Keith Buchanan said that the blaze has caused the roof to collapse and is urging anyone with information to contact the PSNI.

He said: "I visited the hall this evening as fire crews were battling to bring the blaze under control. One of the metal window-guards had been removed when the fire was discovered. The fire has seriously damaged the hall with the roof collapsed.

"The police are investigating the circumstances. I call on anyone with information to contact the police in Magherafelt."
