Emergency services at shopping centre amid reports of an 'explosion'

Emergency services are reportedly at a shopping centre following reports of an explosion. It is understood parts of the White City Retail Park in Manchester have been cordoned off.

Full details of the incident have not yet been released. However a nearby road has also been closed, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they are at the scene to assist with traffic flow. Greater Manchester Fire Service are understood to be leading on the incident and have been contacted for more information.

Pictures from the scene show a number of fire crews. Police can also been seen in the area which has been taped off.

Gas engineers have also been sent to the area. However they have said they do not believe the issue to be gas related. A spokesperson for Cadent Gas said: "We have arrived on scene and are checking our assets but there is no suggestion that this is connected to the gas network."

Travel in the area is also being affected with the road closure. Some public transport may have changes.

A statement from Transport for Greater Manchester on Twitter called on people to check services. It said: "A56 Chester Road, Stretford. Road closed southbound only from White City roundabout to Warwick Road. Emergency services are on scene dealing with an incident. "

A number of premises lost electricity supplies. A spokesman for Electricty North West said: "We received reports of a power cut at 1:41pm affecting 25 properties on Chester Road due to a fault with an underground electricity cable.

"We responded immediately and using our automatic restoration systems power was restored to all properties within the hour at 2:28pm and now, teams of engineers are on site carrying out repair work to the damaged cable."
