'Emergency' school closure as flooding hits in Bristol region

A school in the Bristol region was forced to carry out an "emergency" closure after heavy rain led to flooding.

Ravenswood School, in Nailsea, sent children home today (September 9) when water began to pour inside, forcing the school to turn off the electricity to protect pupils and staff.

In a statement at 11.57am, the school said that ongoing major building works were partly responsible for the flooding.

The statement said: "Emergency school closure affecting Primary, Willow and Post 16 classes.

"As you are already aware the school has been having major building/roof works, which are still ongoing. Due to the extreme weather/rain today a number of areas of the school has flooded.

"As a result of this we have had to turn off the electricity for staff and pupil's safety. This has affected Primary, Willow and Post 16 areas.

"If your child is in Duck, Owl, Kingfisher, Hawk, Bluebird, Robin, Willow or Post 16 classes please can you come and collect your child asap."

A yellow weather warning for storms has been in place across Bristol and Somerset today.

Experts warned that flash floods were likely until around 8pm.
