Emergency road closure put in place after van fire damages bridge

A road in Sandiacre has been closed after a bridge was damaged by a van fire.

Longmoor Lane is closed between College Street and Sandringham Road.

Derbyshire Police were called at 4am on Monday to reports of a van on fire near the bridge.

The bridge was left damaged and structural engineers have been on scene throughout Monday to make sure the bridge is safe.

A police spokesman said: "A van on the grass verge caught fire and the fire damaged the bridge.

"There is a concern that the bridge may have been structurally damaged as a result of the fire.

"There is an emergency road closure while engineers work on the bridge."

Derbyshire County Council said road works would be suspended on Bostock Lane due to the closure.

It tweeted: "We’re suspending roadworks on Bostocks Lane, Sandiacre, due to an emergency closure of Longmoor Road/Longmoor Lane (B6002).

"Car fire under bridge on B6002 may have damaged its support. Engineers assessing. Suspending Bostocks Lane work will help traffic in Sandiacre/Long Eaton."
