Emergency legislation to stop all evictions during coronavirus crisis announced

Emergency legislation to ensure nobody can be evicted during the coronavirus pandemic has been announced.

At a media briefing this afternoon, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that if passed, the new laws will protect tenants from being evicted without six months notice.

It comes as concern amongst tenants grow over abilities to pay rent as many jobs are put at risk amid the growing pandemic.

Ms Sturgeon said: "Members will be asked to consider and, I hope, pass emergency legislation specifically for Scotland.

"Amongst a number of other things, that legislation will ensure that no one can be evicted from their home during this crisis.

"It will increase to six months - in most cases the minimum period of notice that a landlord must give to a tenant before eviction.

"The legislation will apply to tenants in both the private sector and the social housing sector and will provide all tenants with additional at what is an immensely difficult time."

The Scottish Parliament is expected to consider the new legislation on Wednesday.
