Emergency landing at Manchester Airport blocks runway

A plane performed an emergency landing, blocking a runway at Manchester Airport after flying in from the Middle East.

Emirates flight EK21 en route from Dubai suffered a 'technical issue' and is understood to have performed an emergency landing.

Landing just after 8am, the plane was surrounded by emergency services as it blocked one runway.

A spokesman for Manchester Airport said it meant the airport was down to "single runway operations" for a short period of time, reports Manchester Evening News.

It is understood the flight was later towed away and the spokesman added the incident did not delay any other flights.

No further details regarding the technical glitch have been released at this stage.

A tweet from one passenger said: "Emergency landing at Manchester Airport from a Emirates plane that is now totally blocking one runway, lots of emergency services."

An Emirates spokesman said: "Emirates can confirm flight EK21 from Dubai to Manchester on 27 August 2019 experienced a technical fault after landing in Manchester.

"As a precautionary measure, the aircraft was towed to the terminal and checked by the local authorities.

"All passengers disembarked safely and engineers are in the process of fixing the technical issue. Emirates apologises for any inconvenience caused.

"The safety of our passengers and crew is of the utmost importance."
