Emergency crews rush to canal after reports of a person in the water - but nothing was found

Emergency crews responded to reports of a person in the water in a canal in Wigan - but nothing was found.

A large emergency operation was sparked in Platt Bridge at around 8.40pm last night (August 19).

Fire crews, police officers and ambulance crews received reports of a person in the water in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

But it has since been confirmed that nothing was found.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed there were no signs of anyone in the water and Greater Manchester Police also confirmed that a body was not found.

A GMFRS spokesperson said: “Fire crews were called to Platt Bridge, Wigan, at 8.40pm on Wednesday, 19 August, to reports of a person in the water.

“Fire engines from Wigan and Eccles quickly arrived to the scene. Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service were also in attendance.”

“Crews searched the surrounding area but there were no signs of anyone in the water.”

There were reports of a large emergency service presence on Crediton Drive and Abingdon Drive in Platt Bridge on social media last night.

Crews were reportedly spotted searching the canal in that area for several hours.
