Emergency crews respond to reports man had 'fallen 50ft down a ravine' on West Pennine Moors - he'd actually come off his bike

Ambulance crews and mountain rescue volunteers were scrambled to the West Pennine Moors following reports of a serious incident.

Emergency services were called to Red Brook between Edgworth and Ramsbottom just after 8pm on Thursday (June 11).

Initial reports suggested a man had fallen 50ft down a ravine, prompting a large response of 21 volunteers from Bolton Mountain Rescue, along with further members from the Rossendale and Pendle teams.

An ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) were also dispatched.

Once emergency services arrived, it was established the initial report was false.

A man in his 50s was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital, with injuries to his leg, after coming off his bike.

Steve Fletcher from Bolton Mountain Rescue team said: "It sounded very serious at first so that's the reason we sent all those people but it turned out to be a relatively easy job in the end."

A spokesman for North West Ambulance Service added: "We were called at 8.07pm and there was mixed information at first.

"Mountain Rescue confirmed the best access point as Crowthorn Road so we sent an ambulance, rapid response vehicle and a few members of the HART team.

"We assessed and treated one patient, a man in his 50s, for a leg injury.

"He was then taken to Royal Bolton Hospital for further treatment."
