Emergency crews raced to Edinburgh beauty spot as hundreds gathered for New Year bonfire

Fire crews were called to tackle an out of control bonfire on Calton Hill in Edinburgh after hundreds gathered to bring in the New Year.

Revellers mingled as they watched fireworks being set off across the capital while police officers carried out routine patrols in the area.

Edinburgh Live reports that the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were called to attend after flames from a fire began to spread.

Pictures from the scene show huge crowds gathering after the official Hogmanay street party and torchlight procession were cancelled.

There were fireworks set off next to the National Monument and other displays could be seen across the city including Leith, the Pentlands and even from the middle of the road on Princes Street.

Due to the spread of the Omicron variant, celebrations across Scotland were curtailed with members of the public urged to avoid mixing with more than three households indoors.

The Scottish Government have also introduced limits on the number of people that can attend events and urged the public to stay home as much as possible.

Nightclubs also closed their doors for three weeks in efforts to slow the spread of Covid cases across the country.
