Driver in critical condition after crash in Newcastle's western suburbs

A woman in her 40s has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after a serious single-vehicle crash in Newcastle's western suburbs.

Paramedics, police and firefighters were called to Woodford Street at Minmi just after 11am on Wednesday following reports that a car had hit a telegraph pole.

Emergency crews freed the 43-year-old driver from the vehicle before NSW Ambulance paramedics and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter's critical care team treated her at the scene.

The woman was taken by road ambulance to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

A Westpac chopper spokesperson said the 43-year-old had suffered "multiple traumatic injuries".

Police said a crime scene had been set up at Woodford Street, between Minmi Road and Stockrington Road, and the street was expected to remain closed into Wednesday afternoon.

The Newcastle Herald understands no-one else was injured in the crash.
