Emergency Covid Cobra meeting to decide last-minute restrictions under way

Discussions are under way over imposing Covid restrictions in the run-up to Christmas.

A meeting held by the Cobra emergency committee was expected to start at 5pm on Sunday, The Mirror reports.

The meeting will be chaired by Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Steve Barclay, in Boris Johnson's absence, while Scottish and Welsh First Ministers Nicola Sturgeon and Mark Drakeford will be present at the talks.

It comes as a further 82,886 people tested positive for the virus today, while 45 more Covid deaths were recorded, amid fears about the fast-spreading Omicron variant.

On Sunday morning, Health Secretary Sajid Javid refused to rule out new restrictions before the 25th, despite the Prime Minister's previous insistence the government would not be cancelling Christmas.

Mr Javid said there were "no guarantees" amid the rise of the variant, adding that it is time to be "more cautious" amid its rapid spread.

He said Omicron is "spreading rapidly" and now accounts for around 80% of infections in London and about 60% in England.

Modelling from scientific advisers, published on Saturday, showed that if ministers stuck to the current Plan B measures, there could be a peak of 3,000 hospital admissions in England per day.

Currently, English rules don't place any restrictions on festive gatherings - however, in Scotland, people have been told to limit meetings to three households at a time.

On Friday a Downing Street spokesperson said: “The Prime Minister and the First Minister agreed on the importance of close collaboration for the benefit of citizens across the UK.

“They discussed the shared challenges including the economic disruption caused by Covid and will continue to work together.

“The Prime Minister confirmed UK Government will be convening a Cobra meeting over the weekend with counterparts from the devolved administrations to continue discussions.”
