Emergency calls to PSNI could be directed to Scotland amidst 'technical difficulties'

The PSNI have warned that some emergency calls could be impacted by "technical difficulties" with phone lines.

As a safety precaution, some 999 calls made in Northern Ireland may be directed to police in Scotland who will report the details back to Belfast for the appropriate response.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "The Police Service of Northern Ireland is currently experiencing temporary technical difficulties with phone lines which may impact calls to 999 and 101.

"As is standard procedure and as a safety precaution, some 999 calls may be diverted to Police Scotland who will handle the calls and send details back to Belfast for response. We would urge members of the public to only use 999 in the event of an emergency.

"In the event of a non-emergency, we would encourage members of the public to use the online reporting tools available which are unaffected. To report a crime, please visit www.psni.police.uk and select the “Report a crime” button.

"We are working hard to resolve these issues as soon as possible and will provide an update in due course."
