Bushfire under control after threatening Victorian town of Balmoral

A bushfire burning near Balmoral, in Victoria's west.

The Country Fire Authority has downgraded an emergency warning for the town of Balmoral in Victoria's west, which saw school students put into lock down.

The fire burning at the town's recreation reserve on Harrow Road, is now under control.

A Neighbourhood Safer Place was established at Balmoral Memorial Hall and Bowls Club Grounds.

Earlier, leading teacher at the Balmoral Community College Mark Kuchel said about 130 students ranging from Prep to Year 11 were remaining inside as the fire burned about 2 kilometres from the school.

"All the students have been locked down in the school and none of the buses are running at the moment," he said.

But he said the wind was blowing away from the school and the students were safe and "coping fine".

"All the kids are safe, they're all being looked after, there are CFA trucks here looking after them all," he said.

Parents had been notified by an emergency message, Mr Kuchel said.

The town, west of the Grampians National Park, has a population of about 300.

There is a total fire ban for the Wimmera area, with temperatures in the area about 40 degrees Celsius with 25 to 40 kilometre per hour winds.
