Bushfire could linger for days, leaving Perth wreathed in smoke

The bushfire has burned through 50 hectares of bushland in Perth's south.

A bushfire in Perth's south has been downgraded but authorities say it could burn for days, with a smoke alert issued for the city.

A watch and act alert remains in place for people north of Karnup Road, east of Manning Road, south of Mundijong Road and west of Kargotich Road, about 60 kilometres south of Perth's CBD.

The warning area covers the suburbs of Hopeland and Mardella.

The fire is stationary and contained but not controlled.

It started in dense growth in the Lowlands Nature Reserve just after 2:00pm and is being driven by strong south-westerly winds.

The fire is also pushing smoke across parts of the Perth metropolitan area and a smoke alert was yesterday issued for the city.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services incident controller Peter Sutton said there was a significant fuel load in the area that had not burned in some time.

"It is quite a significant incident and it will go over a few days," he said.

"So we just ask people to be vigilant."

It is not known at this stage how the fire began.

Several local roads have been closed.
