Emergency Alert System - exact date and time of nationwide test announced

Glaswegians will receive emergency alerts sent to their mobile devices as part of a test by the UK government this month.

The alerts, which will be siren-like, will sound for around 10 seconds and vibrate. It will also show a message on your home screen which will likely tell you that it is a test and you will not need to do anything.

After the 10 seconds has passed, the message will disappear and the sounds and vibrations will also stop. However, they can be stopped sooner by simply pressing 'ok' on your device.

The exact date and time for the emergency alert has been revealed and here's what you need to know.

Emergency Alert System - date and time

The Emergency Alert System will take place at the end of this month on April 23. This date falls on a Sunday. People with compatible devices should hear their phone sound at 3pm on this day.

The nationwide test of the UK's emergency alert service will go off even if your phone is on silent, do not disturb or any other silencing feature.

Emergency Alert System - how to opt out

It is not recommended to turn off the alerts as it can be life saving, experts have warned.

However, there are concerns for domestic abuse victims who have a concealed phone hidden from their abuser.

As reported by Sky News, the government said they have been working with organisations who focus on vulnerable women and girls to ensure they are not adversely affected.

On iPhones and Android phones and tablets, search your settings for "emergency alerts" and turn off "severe alerts" and "emergency alerts".

On Huawei devices running EMUI 11 or older, search settings for "emergency alerts" and turn off "extreme threats", "severe threats", and "show amber alerts".
