Emergency accommodation pods set to house homeless people in Cardiff

Emergency accommodation pods are set to help house homeless people in Cardiff.

The 19 pods are situated in a car park off Cowbridge Road in Canton near St David's Hospital.

The flats are needed as Cardiff council has been using hotels as a short term solution to house homeless single people and families.

The two-storey development includes 18 studio flats and one one-bedroom flat.

The developers said: "The proposal is necessary as the council are currently using hotels as a short term solution to house otherwise homeless single people and families.

"The proposal is part of the strategy looking to deliver a number of emergency accommodation for homeless single people and families to provide more longevity with regard to emergency accommodation. The proposal is for a temporary use for a 5 year period."

A number of objections to the plans were submitted by nearby residents. Some expressed concerns about their property losing value, anti-social behaviour and the design of the properties.

Planning documents say that South Wales Police were consulted on the plans and they submitted no representations.

They add: "Homeless people have often experienced various problems which will be alleviated by having their own accommodation rather than causing anti-social behaviour.

"Whilst the fear of crime can be a material planning consideration it is not considered that providing shelter for homeless people will itself increase crime."

It adds that the development at the rear of Hayes Place would be covered by a 12m high pole with a CCTV camera.

Planning permission has been granted for the development and work at the site has already taken place.
