Promising Young Woman's Emerald Fennell and Carey Mulligan reunite 15 years after cop drama

A single episode of Trial and Retribution produced three Oscar contenders, with two of this year’s top British nominees first meeting for a fight scene.

Promising Young Woman director Emerald Fennell and Carey Mulligan sat down to watch their debut performance together while filming the critically acclaimed thriller.

The pair – now 35 but 18 at the time – played schoolfriends who had an altercation in a club before Carey’s character came to a grisly end in a 2006 episode of Lynda La Plante’s crime drama.

A young Michael Fassbender was a prosecutor.

“It was my first on-screen fight,” laughs Carey, adding that in her youth, she expected the brief role to be life-changing: “I remember thinking: ‘Am I going to be able to get on the Tube after this?’”

Emerald – Camilla Parker Bowles in The Crown – is up for Best Director, and her debut feature is also in the running for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

Carey, who was nominated for An Education, is up for Best Actress this year.

Michael was up for Best Actor for Steve Jobs in 2016 and Best Supporting Actor for 12 Years a Slave in 2014.
