Emeli Sande drops social media usage to 'once a day' after secret anxiety and depression bid

Emeli Sande has admitted she's cut down her social media usage to just once a day following her private battle with depression and anxiety.

The Next To Me singer, 32, recently spoke about her depression, and said she lost her personality, confidence, and even doubted whether or not to continue being a musician.

Emeli, who won the Icon Award at the Ethnicity Awards, told Mirror Online: "I'm using it like once a day but I'll try and just be myself and encourage people to accept themselves how they are."

She also shared that spending as little time as possible on social media is better for her, confessing it's her biggest problem.

Speaking about what worked best for her to try and overcome her battle, she said: "I found that physical exercise helped me a lot - meditation, and just trying to minimise my time on social media - that was a big one."

The songstress also praised and thanked her family and sister for helping her through the difficult time - saying their close relationship is what helped her.

"I have a really amazing relationship with my sister, so I think it's so important to talk," Emeli told us.

She gave words of encouragement to people who are going through the same thing, saying: "And that's what I encourage people to do all the time - be open and don't feel ashamed of anything, everyone's going through their own challenges in life.

"I'm lucky I had my family and my sister," she added.

Emeli won the Icon Award as she was recognised for her effort in promoting equality for minority groups and for making a difference to society.

When collecting her award at the event, Emeli sang a few lyrics from her song You Are Not Alone in a slowed-down version to the audience.
