Embattled Tas Liberal quits after election

A Tasmanian Liberal, who has been accused of catfishing two women, has resigned one day after being elected to parliament.

Adam Brooks was declared elected on Thursday in the northwest electorate of Braddon following the May 1 state poll but will now not take his seat.

Premier Peter Gutwein announced on Friday that Mr Brooks would resign and is undertaking treatment for his mental health.

He revealed Mr Brooks is facing criminal charges in Queensland over alleged firearms offences and in relation to a "document".

Mr Gutwein said he spoke to Mr Brooks about the matters on Thursday night after he was charged that day and said he was "not in a good space".

"Due to his state of health and the need to focus on his own personal circumstances, it is his intention not to take his seat in parliament," Mr Gutwein told reporters in Launceston.

Mr Brooks was accused during the campaign of dating two women using fake online dating profiles under the name Terry.

He has strongly denied the accusations and flagged legal action against certain people he says have made false claims about his private life.

Mr Brooks' resignation will trigger a recount in the seat of Braddon, with Mr Gutwein expecting the seat to be awarded to another Liberal.

The Liberals were returned to power at the election with 13 members, a one-seat majority, in the state's 25-seat lower house.

Mr Gutwein said Mr Brooks intends to fight the Queensland gun charges. Mr Brooks was charged by Tasmania Police during the campaign with gun offences relating to ammunition storage.

The recount is expected to take several weeks.
