Embattled casino operator's licence ban ruling deferred

Star Entertainment Group can operate its Gold Coast casino for at least another year after the Queensland government deferred a licence suspension.

The further reprieve follows a six-month deferral of The Star Sydney casino's licence suspension, announced on Wednesday.

The Gold Coast suspension deferral to September 30, 2026, followed the Star's progress on remediation measures and was in line with a report by special manager Nicholas Weeks, the Crisafulli government said on Thursday.

The Gold Coast licence was due to be suspended for 90 days from September 30.

Mr Weeks noted in his report that progress on remediation had been slower than anticipated, due to The Star's recent financial challenges and uncertainty.

Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Integrity Jarrod Bleijie said the government had set clear expectations for The Star.

"The Crisafulli Government has the highest standards when it comes to the integrity of casino operations in Queensland," he said in a statement.

"We will continue to closely monitor The Star's remediation progress to ensure key milestones are met."

Mr Bleijie said the deferral did not prevent the government from taking immediate action should The Star fail to meet its remediation obligations.

A 2022 review found The Star "actively encouraged persons excluded (by police in NSW and Victoria) to gamble at its Queensland casinos".

It found a poor corporate culture and marketing focused on drawing in business contributed to these incidents.

"This all placed the Star Gold Coast (casino) at real jeopardy of infiltration by persons about whom The Star had reason to suspect were likely to have been involved in criminality," the review stated.

Star Entertainment Group announced on Wednesday it had been advised by the NSW Independent Casino Commission that the licence suspension for The Star Sydney casino would remain in effect.

The commission had advised the special manager's appointment for the casino had been extended to March 31, 2026, unless terminated earlier, Star said in a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange.

The Star's Group CEO and Managing Director, Steve McCann, said the group acknowledged more work was needed but it remained committed to the remediation plan to support safe and compliant operations.

The Star was committed to a "transparent and constructive relationship" with the manager, the commission and the NSW government, and demonstrating to stakeholders its suitability as a licence holder, he said.
