'Embarrassment' - Peter Crouch slams Tottenham manager search amid Pochettino Chelsea signing

Peter Crouch has labelled Tottenham's search for a permanent successor to Antonio Conte as a "bit of an embarrassment".

Spurs take on Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon, bringing an end to a disappointing season that is likely to end without any European football next time out.

After finishing fourth last season under Conte, Spurs have unravelled this campaign, going out of the Champions League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup earlier than they would have liked. Conte departed after a rant aimed at the players and the club, and his assistant Cristian Stellini took over, only to be sacked after a month, leaving Ryan Mason to steady the ship for the last few games of the season.

Tottenham were actually in fourth place in the Premier League when Conte was relieved of his post, but have dropped to eighth since and are relying on beating relegation-threatened Leeds and hoping Aston Villa lose to Brighton to qualify for the Europa Conference League.

A busy summer awaits, with chairman Daniel Levy looking not only for a new manager but for a new director of football too after Fabio Paratici's departure.

Former Spurs man Crouch cannot believe what is happening in N17. Speaking on BT Sport ahead of the game at Elland Road, he said: "It's become a little bit of an embarrassment to Tottenham, when you think about the club, the training ground, the players and no one seems to want it (the manager's job)."

Spurs have been linked with a host of names, but no deal has been done as yet. Julian Nagelsmann is out of the running, having been a favourite. Mauricio Pochettino has now signed his contract to join Chelsea, Arne Slot signed a new contract with Feyenoord and Xabi Alonso was also ruled out of the running.

Crouch continued: "I think there's a big rebuild needed, defensively and in midfield and potentially losing Harry Kane as well, it's a job, it's a process more than anything. It's still an attractive job, but this season's been so disappointing, some of the football in all honesty was depressing at times. But having said that they've still got some great players."
