Embarrassed VW driver sees car ruined by automatic barriers in Leeds city centre

There was a dose of bad luck for one driver in Leeds today after their car was wrecked by a rising bollard.

A silver Volkswagen estate car was caught by a bollard outside Footlocker and Poundland on Lands Lane, Leeds, this afternoon (Monday).

Although the accident doesn't appear to be too serious, the clash did cause half of the car's bumper to fall off and the airbags were also deployed.

Leeds City Council installed the automated rise-and-fall bollards in several years ago in efforts to pedestrianise shopping areas in the city centre as part of the City Centre Vehicle Access System (CCVAS).

A spokesperson for the council said: "We are aware of the incident on Lands lane of a vehicle coming into collision with the bollards access system on exit earlier today.

"The incident is under investigation at this time. Our bollard systems are clearly signed with appropriate information on how they operate with clear instructions to drivers."
