'Embarrassed' shoplifter who stole perfume from Selfridges thanks judge for her fine

A shoplifter was left feeling "embarrassed" after she was caught trying to swipe hundreds of pounds worth of goods from Selfridges.

Sophia Loukelo tried to steal perfume and clothes worth a total £310 from the sprawling department store in Birmingham.

The 20-year-old, from Northfield, was arrested and ultimately admitted the offence at Birmingham Magistrates Court.

Speaking in court on Tuesday, she vowed she "won't be back" and thanked the judge for handing her a £100 fine, Birmingham Live reports.

She told the court she did not know why she did it after targeting the Selfridges store at at Bull Ring shopping centre.

The shoplifter was stopped by security workers after she was caught acting suspiciously on CCTV earlier in April.

Prosecutor Zulqarnain Saeed said: "She entered the Selfridges store. She was seen on CCTV acting suspiciously.

"Security staff observed her select a number of clothing and fragrances worth £310. She was subsequently arrested."

Areeba Khan, defending, told the court that Loukelo had problems with alcohol and mental health issues for which she was in receipt of support.

The solicitor told the court that Loukelo was also engaging with the probation service.

Ms Khan added: "She can't explain why she stole items on this occasion. She accepts doing this. She is remorseful and embarrassed."

District Judge David Wain said Loukelo was unsuitable for unpaid work or a curfew due to her personal circumstances, when passing sentence on Tuesday.

He said: "You know full well you can't go to shops and take things. It is an easy way to go to court.

"You are starting to become persistent at shoplifting. Persistent shoplifters go to jail. Today the sentence is not jail because you have a current order you are doing well on."

As Loukelo left the courtroom she said: "Thank you judge I won't be back."
