Email you should always send your hotel before you arrive to save a fortune

Flights and accommodation can be pricey enough when you off head on holiday - but costs can really skyrocket if you don't know what you're doing.

Tourists are often taken advantage of and overcharged when their lack of knowledge in a new country is used against them.

One couple claim they were charged £381 for two plates of pasta and fresh fish when they popped into a restaurant in Rome.

Taxi drivers can also be accused of cranking up the prices for unsuspecting visitors who put their faith in the local experts to get them to their hotel using the most honest route.

Lexi Alford, the world record holder for being the youngest person to travel to every country, shared her secret to saving hundreds of pounds by sending one simple email to her hotel before she flys.

The 21 year old, who documents her travels on social media and YouTube, told Bloomberg : "Taxi drivers can be merciless as far as screwing you over, so you need to be very sure on exactly how much it’s going to cost and how long it’s going to take to go from A to B.

"Email your hotel before you arrive and ask what the average price is for a taxi from the airport to the hotel.

"Sending this simple email has saved me hundreds of dollars over the years, because I’ve avoided being taken advantage of by taxi drivers with inflated prices or fixed meters."

Lexi explained that if you get to the hotel and the meter is 'unbelievably high', who should refuse to pay for it and go into your hotel to ask for help.

If that doesn't work, she suggested telling them to call the police, at which point the driver 'will give up'.

Many hotels offer direct transfers as part of the package so you can see all the costs up front. If not, simply ask them for advice on the best public transport to use.
