Elvis Presley touched down at Prestwick Airport and asked 'where am I?'

Elvis has entered the building....

This was the scene 60 years ago as the “King” touched down in Scotland for his only visit here.

At 25 he was the biggest star in the world, but that didn’t mean he could dodge his stint in the US armed forces.

And it was when he was on the return journey from his posting in Germany to the US that his plane stopped at Prestwick Airport for a re-fuelling break.

As he descended the stairs Elvis is supposed to have said:”Where am I?”

And though news of his arrival at the Ayrshire airport - now Glasgow Prestwick - filtered out slowly there were already fans waiting for the icon as our photos show.

And Elvis was happy to speak to fans, sign autographs and have his picture taken.

He even did a small chat with a waiting news reporter.

In those days Prestwick was home of the for the 1631 US Airforce unit.

Around 200 fans were at the terminal after a rumour spread that a “VIP” sergeant was on the flight from Germany.

Elvis also went to the nearby Adamton House, which at the time twas the ness for non-commissioned officers.

In December the Record revealed that the owners of the now Adamton House Hotel have had a special plaque installed to immortalise the King’s visit there.

All the photos taken during the short visit were by Ian Ghee, official photographer for Scottish Aviation Limited.

He had taken his camera to the airport having been told only that a celebrity would be visiting.

The Prestwick visit is reckoned to be the only time Elvis set foot on UK soil.

And it is commemorated in the Elvis Presley Bar at the airport.

Elvis died in 1977, aged 42.
