'Elvis and Nixon' star's best advice came from a Chicago acting class

April 22--"Elvis and Nixon" star Michael Shannon said his best piece of advice came from a sign at a Chicago acting class.

"There was a sign over the class that said, 'It does not matter whether you play well or whether you play poorly; it only matters that you play truthfully,'" Shannon told The Hollywood Reporter in a story posted online Friday.

Shannon, who attended high school on the North Shore and cofounded A Red Orchid Theatre, plays Presley to Kevin Spacey's Nixon. Shannon, 41, also has upcoming roles in the Jake Gyllenhaal thriller "Nocturnal Animals" and the civil rights drama "Loving," set for limited release Nov. 4.

Shannon was nominated for a best supporting actor Golden Globe for his role in the 2014 film "99 Homes."

In his Hollywood Reporter interview, he dismissed a question about his dream project.

"People ask me that a lot and I feel like I should come up with answer just to have one. I'm pretty much always working, so it's hard to imagine wanting to do something else," he said.

"Elvis and Nixon" opened in some Chicago-area theaters Friday.
