Elton John's husband David Furnish marks 7 years sober as pal David Beckham sends love

David Beckham was among the famous friends to congratulate David Furnish on Sunday, as the 58-year-old marked seven years of sobriety.

Furnish, married to the singer Elton John, announced the milestone on his Instagram page.

The father-of-two told his 232,000 followers: "Can’t believe it’s been 7 years."

Beckham added a string of hearts to the post.

Furnish thanked those who had helped on his journey.

He wrote: "Deepest thanks to all the people who have inspired and supported me on my journey through recovery. Without a doubt, the best decision I have ever made in my life."

The father-of-two tagged his post, which featured the words "I am 7 Today!" with the tags: "One Day At A Time", "Serenity", "Fellowship", "Gratitude" and "Service".

In his 2019 autobiography, Sir Elton revealed his husband ended up in rehab as he struggled to cope with the popstar's superstardom.

Elton said David's drinking problem first became apparent when he repeatedly found empty wine bottles in their many homes, and that he once found him passed out at a computer.

Realising the extent of his drink problem, David checked into a clinic in Malibu, California.

In Me, Elton wrote: "I always thought David had slipped into Elton John World with remarkable ease and confidence, but it turned out that a lot of things I was completely used to living with, that I just saw as a fact of life, made him completely anxious.

"He didn’t like being photographed all the time, or beg under press scrutiny, or public speaking at [Elton John] AIDS Foundation events."

Elton first entered into a civil partnership with David in 2005 and married him in 2014 when gay marriage became legal.

The two share two sons.
