The music legend and co-writer Bernie Taupin scooped the Best Original Song for I’m Gonna Love Me Again from Rocketman.
He previously won in 1995 for Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King. Picking up his second Academy Award, he said: “To my beautiful boys who are watching this in Sydney, how much do I love you? Daddy loves you.”
He and husband David Furnish are parents to Elijah, seven, and Zachary, nine.
He later attended his own Elton John AIDS Foundation party, which raised more than £6.4million, and told how he had FaceTimed his children.

Elton, 72, said: “I just wanted to say that because I am so moved, so overwhelmed, this means so much. I actually have two Oscars now, one each for my boys.”
Rocketman stars Taron Egerton as Elton during his breakthrough years in the 1970s.

The big winner on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles was Parasite, the South Korean black comedy, which took six gongs including Best Film and Best Director for Bong Joon-ho.
Joaquin Phoenix, 45, made a moving tribute to his late brother River when he won Best Actor for Joker, while Brad Pitt, 56, won Best Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
