British music icon Elton John has made a heartfelt call for Australia to embrace same-sex marriage as he prepares to give a series of shows in north Queensland.
The star took to Facebook to weigh in on the issue, calling on Australia to embrace same-sex marriage as an "expression of love".
"I love Australia. I love its spirit, it's lack of pretence, it's passion," he wrote in a Facebook post.
"I hope it can embrace the honesty and courage that seeks gay marriage as an expression not of desire but of love."
Sir Elton also reflected on his love for husband and Canadian filmmaker David Furnish, who he married in 2014.
"Almost 24 years ago, I met the person with whom I could be fully myself," he wrote.
"When we married in 2014, it felt like that fact was accepted by the world. For David and I, being able to openly love and commit to one another, and for that to be recognised and celebrated makes life truly worth living.
"That acceptance and support makes us want to be as kind, responsible and productive members of society, as well as the best parents, that we can be."
The 70-year-old singer also recalled his wedding to German sound engineer Renate Blauel.
The pair married in Sydney in 1984, and divorced four years later.
Sir Elton is not the only celebrity to have spoken out about the same-sex marriage debate in Australia.
Ellen DeGeneres has also publicly voiced her support, asking people to 'Vote Yes' in Australia's same-sex marriage postal survey.
"I appreciate my wife every day," the comedian wrote in the post.
Kylie Minogue has also urged people to vote yes, sharing a photo of herself wearing a shirt in support of same-sex marriage last year.
Sir Elton is currently in Australia to perform four public shows in north Queensland, just six months after the region was devastated by Tropical Cyclone Debbie.
He will start his first performance in Mackay tonight, where over 15,000 visitors are expected.
He will then head to Wollongong and Hobart before finishing off in Cairns on Saturday.
