Viewers of Tuesday night's Brit Awards were overcome with emotion at an outstanding duet from Elton John and Olly Alexander.
Music legend Elton and Years & Years frontman Olly gave the annual event its big surprise when they teamed up for a duet of Pet Shop Boys classic It's A Sin.
The song gave its name to the acclaimed recent Channel 4 drama, which starred Olly in the lead role as the moving five part series looked at how the AIDS crisis of the 80s affected the LGBT community, their allies and people of all walks of life.
Years & Years released their own stripped down version of It's A Sin, scoring a big hit on iTunes with their version but, while Olly and Elton's Brits duet started off slowly it soon built into a crescendo and, as Elton remained at the piano, Olly was flanked by dancers as he gave an energetic performance on stage.
And the track, which has been swiftly released as a fundraising single for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, sparked a huge reaction on social media.
One fan took to Twitter to post: "I‘m getting a little emotional at #ItsASin taking on a new dimension in the wake of the brilliant TV series. Neil & Chris must be thrilled with Elton & Olly having done a cover for Elton‘s AIDS foundation. As a PSB fan, I approve!"
A second posted: "That amazing @eltonofficial and @alexander_ olly @BRITs performance was even more incredible because Elton John could never have given that performance when he was Olly Alexander’s age. It shows how far we have come and how much we need to fight to build on that equality."
And, equally impressed, a third tweeted: "Elton & Olly that was phenomenal"
