Elsie Fisher creates new awards show on Twitter after Academy Award snubs

In the wake of Academy Award nominations, Eighth Grade star Elsie Fisher tweeted that due to all of the Oscars snubs she would be announcing the “nominations for the first annual Elsie Awards.”

Fisher, 16, created a Twitter thread with films and actors she felt deserved to be nominated. Her noms include multiple films that weren’t nominated by the Academy, many of which star women and people of color.

The Castle Rock star made sure to nominate more than just white men in her best director category, something comedic actress Issa Rae called attention to while announcing the Academy Award nominees by saying “Congratulations to those men,” a play on the Keke Palmer meme.

Fisher’s best director list didn’t include any white men and the only overlapping director was Bong Joon Ho, who directed the critically acclaimed Parasite.

Other nominees were Alma Har’el, who directed Honey Boy, and Jordan Peele who directed the horror movie Us.

Other Elsie Awards categories include Best Horror Feature, Best Young Performer and Best Independent Feature, which gave The Lighthouse, Honey Boy, Us and Midsommar nominations.

The actress also chose to shake things up by nominating Little Women star Florence Pugh in the Lead Actress category in comparison to her actual Academy Award nomination for Supporting Actress.

Maybe Fisher should host the award show live - it would certainly be a star-studded event.
