Jacob Elordi says the shocking death of his controversial Euphoria character, Nate Jacobs, was a "cool way to go" but it's bittersweet to leave the hit show.

The Australian actor, who has played the character since the first series of the show, said it had been a huge part of his life.

His character suffered a gruesome fate in the most recent episode, when he was buried alive in a coffin by a gangster to whom he owed a million dollars.

He was able to breathe through a pipe to the surface, giving his wife Cassie, played by Sydney Sweeney, 72 hours to get the money together.

However, a rattlesnake slithered down the pipe and fatally bit him.

Speaking in an HBO video going behind the scenes of the episodes, Elordi said: "It was a cool way to go. Nate is somebody who's made so many mistakes and so many dark choices, it's cool to see it all come to what it's come to."

"I had to go into this coffin, my shoulders were touching the side, and I couldn't move my arms, and then they would drill the lid on and it would get dark.

"It was really nice actually. It was quite peaceful."

Sam Levinson, the creator of the show, said he gave "an enormous credit" to Elordi, because Levinson wanted to shoot the scene with a real snake.

"The snakes were rattling, which was really alarming when you're locked in a box," Elordi said.

"They had a boa constrictor that they put a fake rattler on the end of, and Sam was like 'I'm gonna drop a snake on you'.

"And that was it. It's a bittersweet thing. This show is a massive part of not just my career, but my life. It's been amazing, and I'm so proud being a part of this."

The series made superstars out of Elordi and Sweeney, as well as Zendaya, and all three returned for the third series, which followed a four-year hiatus and is set five years after the events of the second season.
