Elon Musk has revealed that Tesla is working on a new technology that will allow its cars to accelerate even faster than "Ludicrous mode".
In a typically cryptic tweet, Musk revealed earlier this week that: "The only thing beyond Ludicrous is Plaid".
For those not familiar with Tesla's lingo, Ludicrous Mode is a powertrain that gives a 10% boost to the vehicle's acceleration.
That means a Model S electric car in Ludicrous mode can go from 0-60 mph in just 2.8 seconds - putting some million-pound supercars to shame.
In 2017, Telsa announced an update called "Ludicrous Plus", which shaved about half a second off that 0-60 time.
Now Plaid will reportedly reduce it even further.
Musk confirmed that the Plaid powertrain would be available on three-motor versions of the Tesla Model S, Model X and Roadster, but not the lower-cost Model 3 or Model Y.
He added that Plaid "will cost more than our current offerings, but less than competitors".
This isn't the first time Tesla has hinted that it is working on a three-motor powertrain.
When Tesla unveiled its new Roadster prototype in November 2017, Musk said it would have three motors and be able to go from 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, with a top speed of 250 mph or more.
The Roadster is due to go into production in 2020.
Meanwhile, Tesla showed off the Plaid powertrain in a video on its official Twitter account yesterday.
The video shows a Tesla Model S equipped with a Plaid powertrain completing a lap of the Laguna Seca racetrack in California in 1:36.555 - a second faster than the record for a four-door sedan.
The names "Ludicrous" and "Plaid" are a nod to the comic science fiction film Spaceballs, in which they refer to starship speeds.
