Elon Musk's Twitter buyout is first step in creating new 'everything app'

Elon Musk's plan to buy Twitter will lead to the creation of a new "everything app", the billionaire businessman has claimed. The Tesla CEO has rekindled a deal that will see him by Twitter for $44billion (£38.93bn).

Twitter recently confirmed that Mr Musk had put forward an offer to buy the company for the second time this year. But while the move may seem unusual to some, Mr Musk has now claimed it will help in the development of a new app, which he is calling "X".

Taking to the social media platform, he said: "Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app."

Another Twitter user suggested that it may have been easier to build X from the ground up. But Mr Musk replied: "Twitter probably accelerates X by 3 to 5 years, but I could be wrong."

The businessman has previously spoken about his aim of building an "everything app". He wishes to build a "super-app" which works more like China's WeChat.

WeChat not only works as a messaging service but is used across China by millions of people for a host of applications. It can function as a social media site, as well as paying for goods, booking doctors appointments, applying for loans and playing video games.

The name X is thought to be a reference to X.com., which was a domain owned by Mr Musk. It later became payment firm PayPal.
