Elm Street Farm says thank you for donations after shocking raid on equipment

A farm struck by thieves earlier this month has already had a "great response" from Bristol residents.

Elm Street Farm, in Stapleton, is run by the Brandon Trust charity, which helps people with learning disabilities.

A shocking raid on the farm saw a van, cash, power tools and lawn mowers stolen.

But now it has emerged that offers of donations and help have already been extended.

Brandon Trust chief executive Sue Porto said: “We’ve had a great response from people in Bristol, with offers of equipment, tools and practical help such as security, as well as donations and well wishes, so thanks to everyone."

However, the 37-acre farm is still seeking help to replace its 2004-plate minibus.

The vehicle had been used to take people to and from the farm, but it also ferried produce to Bristol Farmers' Market in St Nicks.

A spokesman for the Brandon Trust told Bristol Live that a twin-cab Transit van is being sought, ideally one that is fuel efficient but not diesel (in light of the looming Bristol ban).

Soon after the thieves struck over the weekend of December 7-8, Ms Porto said: "Elm Tree Farm offers vital opportunities for individuals to learn work skills and have a paid job, something which far too few people with a learning disability have access to.

"Coming to the farm also has an invaluable impact on people in terms of enabling them to build confidence and make friends.

"A crime like this is utterly devastating for everyone who benefits from the work we do here."

Around 50 people with learning disabilities and autism work at the farm, which has cattle, lambs and pigs as well as fruit and vegetable patches.
