Ellis Simms Hearts transfer latest as 'major stumbling block' emerges over potential deal

Hearts look set to miss out on a deal to bring Ellis Simms back to the club as a major stumbling block has emerged in a potential transfer, according to a report.

The Everton striker installed himself as a fans' favourite at Tynecastle while on loan last season and scored seven goals in 20 appearances. He played a big role in helping the Jambos secure third spot in the Premiership behind Celtic and Rangers and to reach the Scottish Cup Final. Robbie Neilson's men have earned guaranteed European group stage football as a reward for their stunning season but the Scottish Sun report a deal to land the striker will prove too costly.

Neilson is eager to re-sign the 21-year-old but the Toffees are believed to be looking to sell the hitman rather than sanction another loan spell away from the club. The reported £500,000 fee isn't a stumbling block for the capital club but it is the five-figure weekly wage he picks up at Goodison - with a number of English clubs believed to be ready to match it.

English Championship outfit Millwall are reportedly leading the chase for Simms with the same source claiming there is no interest from Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Rangers for the striker, despite speculation online.

It's been a busy summer in Gorgie so far with Neilson keen to continue adding to his ranks.

Alan Forrest, Kye Rowles, Lewis Neilson, Alex Cochrane and Jorge Grant have all put pen to paper so far with Neilson vocal about his attempts to up squad numbers and strengthen in the attacking third.

Fellow former loanee Ben Woodburn departed at the end of the season and has now signed on at Preston after impressing on trial.

Hearts will play a number of Scottish sides in friendlies this week before replicating what it will be like playing in Europe by taking trips south of the border the following week for matches.

They face East Fife, Spartans and Bonnyrigg Rose over the course of the next four days before taking on Tranmere Rovers and Preston North End.
