Elliot Hanson vows to bounce back after rough ride at Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Seize the day is the mantra Elliot Hanson has vowed to stick to after a timid display left the Macclesfield sailor up against it at the Olympic Games.

Hanson crossed the line in 12 th and 17 th in his two races on Monday and has lost ground on the medal positions, falling to 10 th overall.

And the 27-year-old said he played it too cautious and won’t make the same mistake again when the action resumes on Tuesday.

“I’m disappointed with my performance today as I had every opportunity to get some good results and feel I let some points slip,” said Hanson, whose race was broadcast live on Eurosport and Discovery+ .

“It was a really tricky race course with unstable winds and I played it a little too conservative at times when my rivals backed themselves. “

Hanson was one of the first men on the water on Monday, as the laser class look to make progress after race two on Sunday was postponed due to light winds.

But he started slowly, finishing almost two minutes off the pace in the first race and then 2:11 back in the second as he crossed in 17 th .

The winds were stronger at Sagami Bay on Monday and are likely to get stronger tomorrow.

A typhoon heading for Japan’s east coast is not as powerful as first feared when rowing and archery were cancelled but it is still likely to impact the action on the water.

Hanson is ready for whatever nature throws at him and is desperate to drag himself back into contention.

He added: “I’m still in the hunt and with three races tomorrow I’m looking forward to leaving it all out there in what promises to be a very physically demanding day.”
