Ellie Goulding confessed she ‘didn’t ever want to go home’ and drank vodka like it was water during her booze battle.
The Burn hitmaker candidly shared details of the turbulent time in her life in an interview with the Reign With Josh Smith podcast, and said she turned to alcohol to chase the high of being and tour and performing for thousands of fans every night.
“(I would be in) the middle of the day and thinking, 'Ooh, when can I have a wine or something?’” Ellie recalled.
The award-winning singer continued: “It's no coincidence that most artists have had their days of booze and drugs, because it is that constant high that you crave.”
Ellie said the adrenaline rush from performing on stage was something she craved, and she discovered drinking vodka and soda water kept her hydrated, but also gave her a buzz.
“As soon as you've done a tour where you've had constant adrenaline from performance after performance,” she explained to host Josh.
“Everyone is different. For me, it was drinking. I loved to drink and I discovered a vodka soda,” Ellie stated, revealing she would drink more to “feel alive”.
“I thought, ‘OK, cool, I can stay hydrated but also get very, very drunk at the same time’. It was like a constant seeking of highs and the next thing you could do to make you feel alive,” the Love Me Like You Do hitmaker shared.
Ellie has since overhauled her lifestyle, and even wrote a book - Fitter. Calmer. Stronger. - which details her crippling addiction to exercise, and how she overcame her demons to embrace a healthier diet and approach to working out.
The singer wed art dealer Caspar Jopling in a star-studded ceremony at York Minster in 2019, attended by the likes of Princess Eugenie, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom.
The couple retreated to their country pile in Gloucestershire, and Ellie announced her surprise pregnancy earlier this year, before giving birth to the couple’s first child, son Arthur, in April.
She’s previously dated fellow singers including Dougie Poynter, Niall Horan and Ed Sheeran, as well as a rumoured dalliance with Prince Harry, and Ellie cheekily confessed that before she was married, she would wake in the middle of the night thinking about her failed relationships.
“I would be like, ‘What the hell was I thinking?’” she joked.
“Or I'd remember an ex boyfriend and think, ‘Should I reach out?’ No! Why would I reach out to my ex-boyfriend?” Ellie laughed.
