Ellen Page has criticised Chris Pratt for attending an “infamously anti-LGBTQ” after he appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and discussed his faith.
The actor, who was there to promote The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, explained that he just finished a 21-day Daniel Fast that he was guided through by his church and pastor. He also said that his pastor had given him advice, including the motto: “If the spotlight that is shining on you is brighter than the light that’s within you, it will kill you.”
Pratt attends Hillsong Church, which is popular with many celebrities, including Kendall and Kylie Jenner and Justin Bieber. The megachurch was founded in Australia, but now has locations in both New York City and Los Angeles.
Page tweeted shortly after the segment aired, writing: “Oh. K. Um. But his church is infamously anti lgbtq so maybe address that too?”
Hillsong has faced controversy since Carl Lentz, who leads its New York branch, said in 2015 that he believes homosexuality is a sin and that a gay member of the church could never hold a leadership position. That same way, Brian Houston, the church’s global senior pastor, released a statement which criticised two male choir members of the church who had gotten married.
Page, who is set to star in Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, came out as gay in 2014 and has been an outspoken advocate for LGBT+ rights.
She appeared on The Late Show last week, delivering a “fired up” speech accusing the president and vice president of discriminating against the LGBT community and spending their careers “trying to cause suffering”.
The 31-year-old, who married Emma Portner in January last year, said: “I am fired up tonight, it feels impossible not to feel this way right now, with the president and Vice President Mike Pence, who wishes I couldn’t be married. Let’s just be clear. The Vice President of America wishes I didn’t have the love with my wife. He wanted to ban that in Indiana.”
