Ellen Keane wins Paralympics gold medal in SB8 100m breaststroke final

Ireland's Ellen Keane has won a gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympic Games.

The Irish swimmer put in a phenomenal display in the SB8 100m breaststroke final to secure her first ever Paralympics gold in an incredible performance.

Keane took over two seconds off her personal best, finishing in 1:19.93, and turning a Rio 2016 bronze into gold for Team Ireland.

The 26-year-old Clontarf native was a favourite to medal in the event, and took the front with just 25m to go having trailed in second place for much of the race behind New Zealand's Sophie Pascoe.

"I don't think it's fully sank in yet," a delighted Keane told RTE.

"When I dove in my goggles filled up with water, so maybe that was a good thing because I couldn't see the girls around me.

"Just on the turn I kind of saw Sophie (Pascoe) a little bit, but I just had a game plan in mind and stuck to that.

"The last thing my coach said to me was: 'If I need to push you in a wheelchair home, I want those legs wrecked!'. And that's exactly what I did."

After winning her heat this morning just ahead of Pascoe, Keane was bullish about her chances heading into the final at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.

"The heat was fun, I just wanted to get in and swim fast and that’s what I did," Keane said.

"Tonight though the girls that I swim against are world class so anything can happen tonight in the final."
