Ellen DeGeneres has confessed that she had consumed three “weed drinks” and melatonin sleeping pills before driving her wife Portia de Rossi to the hospital last month.

The comedian and talk show host’s partner had appendicitis and had to have an emergency appendectomy.

Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, DeGeneres said she drank three cannabis-infused drinks ahead of the unplanned trip, admitting the journey was “probably not safe”.

“So, Chelsea Handler told me about these weed drinks, they’re called Cann, and they have CBD or THC – I don’t know what the good thing is,” she said.

“I drank one, and I didn’t feel anything, so I drank three, and then I took two melatonin sleep pills.”

On her decision to drive, she added: “I did. I mean, I kicked in, like my adrenaline, because I just had to rush her there. It’s probably not safe. I shouldn’t be saying any of this.”

DeGeneres added that de Rossi is “feeling much better now” following her emergency surgery.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show recently lost over a million viewers following allegations of a toxic workplace on the series.

Season 18 of the show debuted on 21 September 2020, with DeGeneres apologising to fans as she addressed the controversy for the first time. The episode drew the highest ratings for a premiere in four years.

She said: “I learned that things happened here that never should have happened. I take that very seriously and I want to say I am so sorry to the people that were affected.”

DeGeneres added: “I know that I am in a position of privilege and power and with that comes responsibility and I take responsibility for what happens at my show.”

Despite this, The Ellen DeGeneres Show’s viewership has dropped significantly since then, according to Nielsen ratings.
