Whether or not a woman can become president of the United States was one of the hot topics at the latest Democratic debate.
Bernie Sanders was asked by CNN moderator Abby Phillip if he had told Elizabeth Warren in 2018 that a woman could not win the US election.
The Vermont senator immediately denied saying this, responding: ”I didn’t say it. And I don’t want to waste a whole lot of time on this, because this is what Donald Trump and maybe some of the media want. Anybody knows me knows that it’s incomprehensible that I would think that a woman cannot be president of the United States.”
Ms Warren said in a statement on Monday that Mr Sanders did make that remark two years ago.
“Look at the men on this stage. Collectively they have lost 10 elections,” Ms Warren said during the debate. “The only people on this stage who have won every single election that they’ve been in are the women.”
The only other woman to make it to the debate stage was Senator Amy Klobuchar. Tulsi Gabbard is the only other female candidate running in the fast diminishing field.
There was another moment of tension between the two senators at the end of the debate, where Elizabeth Warren appeared to refuse to shake Bernie Sanders' hand.
Last night's debate featured just six presidential candidates, the fewest of this election cycle yet.
