Elizabeth Warren criticizes Twitter's political advertising ban

Sen. Elizabeth Warren is bashing Twitter's upcoming ban on political advertising — and climate change is part of her thinking.

The big picture: This isn't the first time that the White House hopeful has raised the issue of political ads on social media platforms.

  • Last month, her campaign ran a false ad on Facebook that accused the social media platform of endorsing President Trump in the 2020 election to highlight Facebook's policy of not fact-checking political ads.

What she's saying: "Twitter's new ad policy will allow fossil fuel companies to buy ads defending themselves and spreading misleading info — but won't allow organizations fighting the climate crisis to buy ads holding those companies accountable. We need accountability," the Democratic White House hopeful tweeted Tuesday.

  • Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey replied to Warren that he would "take this into consideration."
