Elizabeth Warren decried President Donald Trump as “corruption in the flesh” as the Democratic White House contender staged her biggest campaign rally in New York.
Speaking to an estimated 20,000 supporters who packed Washington Square Park last night, the Massachusetts senator sought to build on momentum that has seen her emerge as the biggest rival to former vice-president Joe Biden for the party’s presidential nomination in next year’s election.
Framed by the square’s iconic marble arch, Ms Warren said Mr Trump was a symptom of a US economy beholden to special interests and big business that was leaving the average American behind.
“Donald Trump is corruption in the flesh,” Ms Warren claimed, outlining plans to root out corruption in the White House, Congress and courts.
“He is sworn to serve the people of the United States, but he serves only himself and his partners in corruption.”
Some supporters waited four hours for selfies with Ms Warren, 70, who overtook fellow Left-winger Bernie Sanders to move into second place in the race.
